European Extreme Sports

European Extreme Sports

Extreme sports are a great way to get a rush of adrenaline whether you’re rushing down the side of a mountain on a snowboard, or bungee jumping from the top of a huge building. However that’s not the only reason that people really love doing extreme sports, and at the same time they also provide the opportunity to be outside doing what you love and to see some truly fantastic views (helped by the fact that a lot of extreme sports take place outdoors). European extreme sports then offer the chance for adrenaline junkies to get their fix but to also explore the continent and see some of its beaches and mountain views. European extreme sports are highly popular and the varied terrain of the different European countries lends itself perfectly to all manner of European extreme sports.

When it comes to water sports you are spoiled for choice and there are any number of great beaches to provide European extreme sports. England is one such location and despite the cooler climate is great for water sports – particularly down the South coast in Cornwall where surfing and Wakeboarding is a way of life, and in Bournemouth which has recently seen the addition of the world’s first artificial coral reef designed specifically to improve the surf and attract tourists interested in European extreme sports. Away from England there are plenty of beaches suited to European extreme sports that offer a warmer climate and hotter seas with just as much surf including Spain, Portugal, Bulgaria and Southern France.

European extreme sports aren’t all about the sea though and winter sports are also highly popular in some parts of Europe. Here again you are spoiled for choice and can choose from the Zakopane mountains in Poland, the Swiss and French Alps, Austria and many more. The Zakopane mountains in particular offer a very cheap way to experience some fantastic views and some great European extreme sports whether snowboarding, skiing or sledging is more your cup of tea.

There are a range of other great European extreme sports too though and many of these require cliffs and mountains for rock climbing, hang gliding or caving. Alfont in France is one location that is brilliant for rock climbing and has some areas overhanging the sea for some daredevil-ish ‘free soloing’ where you rock climb with no ropes and only water underneath. Holne Park in Southern England meanwhile offers a whole range of European extreme sports with guidance including high ropes, caving, canoeing and climbing.

European Soccer Championship

European Soccer

The European Soccer Championship (known in Europe as the European Football Championship or UEFA Cup) is a soccer competition like the world cup held by the Union of European Football Associations (or ‘UEFA’) once every four years. The European soccer championship has been going since 1960, and is staggered to take place in between the World Cup on the even numbered years between the World Cup tournaments. Previously known as the UEFA European Nations Cup, the name was changed in 1968 to the European Football Championship in Europe and the European Soccer Championship in North America reflecting the different terms used in the two continents.

As the name suggests, the European Soccer Championship is open to all Union of European Football Association members – which caters for all the major countries in Europe. Each country then puts forwards a squad for the European Soccer Championship much as they would in the World Cup chosen from the best players across all their teams and even international teams (for example, while David Beckham now plays for LA Galaxy, he would play for England in the European Soccer Championship being born in England).

Again like the World Cup, the European Soccer Championship also has a qualifying stage where the teams must earn the opportunity to play in the competition. This involves a series of smaller games before the large more widely televised events. From here the winners will then go through to the final tournament of the European Soccer Championship which has sixteen players in total. These are divided into four groups of equal size and then drawn up against one another using seeding to play each other. These winners then go through to the European Soccer Championship quarter final where there will be a knockout format. Of course this is then followed by a semi final with the winners playing each other in the finals. Unlike the FIFA World Cup, the European Soccer Championship has no play off for third place. The winners of the European Soccer Championship then receive the Henri Delaunay Trophy, named after Henri Delauney who originally came up with the concept of the European Soccer Championship (though he would not live to see the first tournament). The most recent winners were Germany in 2008, Greece in 2004, France in 2000, Germany in 1996 and Denmark in 1992.

Placed between the World Cup, the European Soccer Championship offers another large tournament for football fans in Europe where the sport is incredibly popular. It is second in size only to the World Cup, and is highly marketed and televised across most European countries. The next European Soccer Championship will take place in 2012 and will be co-hosted by Poland and Unikraine.

European Basketball Salaries

European Basketball Salaries

European Basketball Salaries

Basketball players moving to Europe might well be interested in European basketball salaries and how much they can earn for their sport moving abroad. Like all professions, European basketball salaries will obviously vary depending on multiple factors – the skill of the player, the team they’re playing for, the league that team plays in, negotiations and an element of luck. However as a general rule European basketball salaries are still lower than those in the US.

The reason European basketball salaries are lower is really to do with the popularity of the sport. While in the US basketball is widely watched and enjoyed, in Europe different sports are more successful such as football (soccer), cricket, rugby and tennis. Basketball in Europe then is more of a fringe sport not even shown on much television, and this is reflected by European basketball salaries. In most sports the high salaries of the players simply reflects the fact that there is a lot of money in the industry due to the large number of fans attending games, paying to watch them on television and buying merchandise etc. Quite simply there isn’t enough money in the sport for the European basketball salaries to be that high. As such players such as Lynn Greer and Anthony Parker were forced to come to the American NBA on salaries under 2 million USD as they couldn’t get that much from their European basketball salaries with any teams showing how much lower European basketball salaries are when compared to those in the US. As such the majority of highest paid European basketball stars move to the US to play for the NBA where they will experience higher salaries and more fame.

Saying that European basketball salaries are low is of course meaning low in comparison to the salaries in the US and salaries for other European sports. All sports are paid fairly highly in comparison to other professions and most European basketball salaries are still more than enough to live on comfortably.

European basketball salaries will also depend on the European country. In Russia for example the European basketball salaries in Russia are slightly higher as the teams have a slightly higher budget. The PBC CSKA (a Russian team known as the ‘Red Army’ which plays in the Eastern European VTD United League) for example pay some players European basketball salaries of around 4 million USD for a year which is higher than a lot of other European basketball salaries.

Power of German basketball in the Olympics

The 2008 Germany Olympic basketball team came out this year with a lot of talent. Every single Olympic basketball year, Germany always has the most skilled players. The problem is why can’t they finish? Germany always starts out great in the Olympics. Every single exhibition game or tournament ranked game they come out, play hard and show everyone what they are made of. It seems like they always run out of gas at the end or when the games matter the most. Tim Ohlbrecht is one of Germany’s best performers, whom the NBA was looking at before he was 18. Tim Ohlbrecht’s first advantage is his height of 6 foot ten inches. The German Olympic team succeeded in dishing the ball to Tim, and the give and go which really was attached to them. Another great player is Jan Jagla. He is about seven foot tall, he can shoot threes, mid range jumpers and shots off the back board.

German Basketball Fans

If Germany loses any point guards, or shooting guards due to injuries or fatigue, they can put Jan at the point or the two men. Germany is well rounded with talent. They even have NBA star Dirk Nowitzki on their side. In the next 3 years, Germany could indeed win a gold medal in the Olympic basketball tournament. Germany has an awesome recruiting staff, whom really attracts and signs players to Europe. Germany’s Robert Garrett and Steffen Hamann are big time impact players that have a bright future with Germany. Germany can keep up with teams like USA and Argentina or Lithuania. Especially after the new recruits who are headed towards the German Olympic team in the next couple years. Just keep your eyes open!

Lithuanian Legend – Sabonis

Arvydas Sabonis in the NBA

Arvydas Sabonis in the NBA

Arvydas Sabonis is named as one of the NBA’s best European centers to ever play basketball. The former Portland Trailblazer was spectacular, no doubt about it. He muscled his opponents down in the paint. Either Sabonis was throwing some elbows and not getting caught, or taking the ball and using his hook shot move. Sabonis is seven foot three from the beautiful country Lithuania. He was signed by the Portland Trailblazers, and retired as a Portland Trailblazer. Arvydas played from 1995 to 2003. The 8 years became limited to him because he had some knee problems causing him to wear knee braces every game and practice. A solid player, everyone loved him, coaches, players, fans, boosters, everyone enjoyed all the time and commitment he put in at Portland. Sabonis had a total amount of 5,629 career points scored. The Lithuanian center averaged about 12 points a game which is pretty dang good for the Lithuanian center. He also had a total number of 378 rebounds, including offensive and defensive rebounds. Sabonis played for the Lithuania Olympic team when he was able to. Either Sabonis would throw it down with some authority, or he would just easily dish the ball right back out to the point guards and they would just knock down the 3 point shot all day, giving Arvydas Sabonis the assists. Sabonis’s rookie season with the Trailblazers, he averaged 14 points a game, and by year 1998, he was up to 16 points a game but as his knees began to worsen, he steadily declined to 12 points per game, which is still decent. I wouldn’t be surprised if Arvydas goes into coaching in Lithuania. He had a very successful career and would do well. Best wishes to Arvydas Sabonis.
