Europe Band
Europe isn’t just a continent, it also shares its name with a Swedish glam rock/heavy metal band which formed in 1979 and was a hit throughout the 80s. The Europe band is most notable for its big hit in 1986 ‘The Final Countdown’ – a song that centers around a dramatic keyboard riff and lyrics inspired by the David Bowie song ‘Space Odysee’. This is by far the most recognized song by the Europe band and one of the biggest hits of the 80s for many. As a result it finds its way into many films and television series, where its bombastic nature is often used to comic effect (for example it’s part of Gob’s act in ‘Arrested Development’). It’s also used in the computer games ‘NHL 11′ and ‘NHL Slapshot’ and is highly used in American sports which has resulted in its becoming so widely known. The song, which was originally mean to be a concert opener and not a single, was number 1 in 25 countries, but only made it to number 8 in the US.
The Europe band has also had many other hits however, and the album from which titular ‘The Final Countdown’ was taken itself sold over three million copies and had several other hit singles. In total however the Europe band only had 2 top 10 singles and 2 top 20 albums (the other being ‘Out of This World’). In total they have thus far released eight studio albums, three live and three compilations.
When the Europe band was formed it was originally under the name ‘Force’. The best-known lineup consists of front man Joey Tempest, guitarist John Norum and drummer Tony Reno. In 1992 the band went on a hiatus and reunited for a single performance in 1999 in Stockholm. Following this however they would officially return in 2003 and have subsequently released three albums. Today Ian Haugland has replaced Tony Reno on drums.
While their music is very 80s in flavor and no longer the current trend, it is a great up-beat slice of the 80s. The Europe band are still touring and put on a great show.

Sincerely, I haven’t heard about Europe band before. Your article is interesting. It says so many things about this band. Although I don’t think I would like the songs of the Europe band. They are not my type.
Europe band’s best song is ‘The final countdown’. It was indeed a hit at that time. When you say Europe band first you are thinking at this song. It is by far the most recognized song by the Europe band. Everybody loved and loves this song.
Europe band was dad’s favorite band. He has all their songs. Its favorite song is of course ‘The final countdown’. I too like this song. I guess Europe band is not so bad after all.
I didn’t know that Europe band was formed under the name ‘Force’. I’m glad they changed their name after. They made a good decision. Europe band sounds much better than ‘Force’. I think it is more representative for Europe this way.
Europe band is a band a little unknown to me. I know only a few songs from Europe band. ‘The final countdown’ is one of them. I really love this song. It is indeed a great hit.
Sincerely, Europe band singers are ugly. I don’t like even one of them. And the 4th one is not even from the movie. With that baldness it doesn’t belong in the Europe band. The rest have long hair and he doesn’t have hair at all.
Ferdoo, Europe band singers are ok. Why did you say they are ugly? You cannot even see their faces in this picture. Europe band singers were great in that period. They are representative for the 80s.
I vaguely remember hearing about this band. I do not know any of their songs though. I am interested in learning more so I may have to look them up. I wonder if they are on youtube?

I too love the song The Final Countdown. It is one of Europes’ best songs. It is one that stays in your head for a while. I have it in my head right now, singing along to it.
What some people here give of themselves is an insolence. No idea of this magnificent band, but the mouth large tear. Europe is not only “The final countdown”. They have much more hits. This band is totally underrated. Unfortunately. But I love them and I will always love them. I´m looking forward to the new album. Rocks on guys.
