I've just been writing about a European cities poll carried out by TripAdvisor.com, for the Auto Europe blog (http://blog.auto-europe.co.uk/). Almost 2,400 travellers named Paris as having the best-dressed locals and best cuisine in Europe, but it wasn't voted the most romantic - Venice won that accolade.

That's very true, Julien. Europe destinations are famous thanks to the continent's diversity. People should keep this in mind.

I think that this is a very narrow focus on Europe as a tourist destination. Most capitals of the countries have to offer something, and not all are as expensive as Paris. And all countries have to offer much more than just their capitals.

A bit strange is also the list: Edinburgh, Düsseldorf, Brussels - and Switzerland. Three cities and one country?!

If you want to visit Europe, you should ask yourself what side of the continent is most interesting, the historic one, the one of the 20th century (including the World Wars and the Cold War history), or the 21st century. Do you want to discover the quiet remote areas or the metropolitan areas? Do you want to have it cold, warm, or mild? Do you have time or do you have to focus? Do you want to see just the beautiful face of the continent or also the problematic areas?

Reducing Europe (or the European Union) to four or five places is just wrong, because the special feature of this region is its diversity, and everyone can - and should - chose which elements are most interesting, most relevant, most exiting.

The rest is a question of money...
