European Conspiracy Theories - Princess Diana

Everybody loves a good conspiracy, and nowhere is this more apparent than on the internet where a quick search will find you pages and pages of debate surrounding whether we landed on the moon, whether the planes that crashed into the twin tower were actually American government missiles that were disguised by a ‘cloaking/holographic technology’ (yes, some people actually believe that…) and whether Roswell really was the site of an alien crash landing or just a weather balloon as the official reports claim. This is a universal occurrence and reflects a world-wide distrust for authority and large organizations – thus Europe is no different and there are no shortage of European conspiracy theories. Here we will look at some of the best known European conspiracy theories, who believes them and what the evidence is for them.

Princess Diana

One of the most talked about European conspiracy theories even now is the death of Diana. The official story is that she was killed in a car crash after her driver was distracted going through a tunnel by Paparazzi. However not everyone seems to agree on this official line, and there are many who believe this is one of the biggest European conspiracy theories in recent times. Their belief is that the Duke of Edinburgh/MI6 had Princess Diana killed after she had become a political liability following her divorce from Prince Charles. Some cells within MI6 have been shown to operate almost autonomously and it was revealed that they have files on John Lennon and Jack Straw. The fact that the bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones survived the crash ads to speculation that he was somehow involved in the conspiracy, as does the seeming mystery surrounding the driver, Henri Paul, who was not Diana’s usual.

That’s just one of the European conspiracy theories revolving around Diana however, and a slightly more elaborate and unlikely one is that Diana faked her own death in order to avoid the invasive pursuits of the press. On the other hand some versions state that Diana crashed in an attempt to fake her death.

The European Union

The European Union is an organization that aims to bring about financial and political cooperation across Europe and to this end it has put forward many initiatives such as the Euro. While there is no ‘grand scheme’ according to the official statement, it shall likely continue to bring the countries of Europe closer together.

But that’s not what some conspiracy theorists say, and this is yet another target for the ever-popular European conspiracy theories. This time the conspiracy is that the true ambitions of the EU have been hidden from us, and that the intention was there all along to build the EU into a single federal state that would completely unite separate countries politically, culturally and financially – thus also ‘destroying’ the nation states. According to these European conspiracy theories we as the general public would have been too opposed to this idea, and so the movements towards this final scheme were disguised as being more random and spontaneous than they in fact were – the true nature of the EU will only be revealed to Europeans when it’s ‘too late’ to turn back the clocks. Here is a European conspiracy theory that has some legs, and is taken a little more seriously than others. Certainly some members of the EU are pushing for a more highly integrated union, and many of the member countries have become subject to laws other than those created by their own politicians and that were not voted in.

The Greek Economy

While it’s not quite in the same league as these other European conspiracy theories, there is currently some murmurs around Greece of a conspiracy by ‘foreigners’ to damage their economy. As everyone knows the Greek economy has seen better days at the moment, and Prime Minister George Papandreo said in a speech that there was an attack on the ‘Eurozone’ which had been orchestrated by ‘foreigners’ who were aiming to weaken the Euro by attacking countries like Greece. Apparently a common phrase in Greece at the moment is ‘the foreigners want to destroy us’ though how seriously most Greeks take this saying is uncertain.

It may be a move simply by the Prime Minister to unite the country in repairing the economy, but there is certainly some sincerity in the paranoia. Though as both America and England are happy with the strength of the Euro, it is uncertain which ‘foreigners’ would have any motive to do this. The press are accusing foreign bankers.

Hitler is Still Alive…

And of course no one said that all European conspiracy theories were to be taken seriously and this one has to be one of the most bonkers out there. Yes, some people believe that Hitler is still alive. After the skull that was meant to be Hitlers transpired to actually be a woman’s these rumors took off. The argument is that he fled on the ‘Ghost Convoy’ to Argentina along with Adolf Eichmann and Dr Joseph Mengele, or that he was smuggled out the country in a U-Boat. The really extreme European conspiracy theorists even propose that he fled to a moon base using Nazi rocket technology.

Is Hitler still alive on the moon? Is he planning on using the EU to finally achieve his goal of world domination? Did he kill off Diana in order to weaken sovereignty in England to this end? Is he trying to destroy Greece for his sick amusement? Is he actually the last of a race of Lizard People who once lived beneath the Earth’s crust? You decide.

    Great article!

And yes the Greeks are right. The rest may just be theories.

I don’t take seriously all these European conspiracy theories. The one with Hitler is hilarious. I don’t believe it. I don’t think Hitler is still alive. It is probably one of the most stupid European conspiracy theories from all these.

European conspiracy theories exist just for fun. Same for those american conspiracies. I don’t usually believe in such things. Oh and that is definitely not hitler. That might be photoshopped. Or it might be someone who looks like Hitler.
