European Dress Sizes

Certain areas of Europe are particularly known for their dresses and their fashion in general. Take France for instance which is the birthplace of many a great dress design, or Italy which many designers also call home. Thus it’s no surprise that many people will want to pick up European dresses while traveling, or will order them online. The only problem is European dress sizes, which are different from those in the US and which many people shopping online will not know.

Making life more difficult is the fact that European dress sizes vary between say Germany and France and are completely different in the UK than they are in mainland Europe. Fortunately help is at hand, and below you can find a guide to European dress sizes compared to US and UK dress sizes.

U.S. Germany Belgium/France Italy U.K.
0 28 30 34 2
2 30 32 36 4
4 32 34 38 6
6 34 36 40 8
8 36 38 42 10
10 38 40 44 12
12 40 42 46 14
14 42 44 48 16
16 44 46 50 18
18 46 48 52 20
20 48 50 54 22

By observing this chart it is possible to recognize which European dress sizes will fit you as well as which UK dress sizes. Note however that UK dress sizes are notorious for changing depending on which manufacturer produced the clothes – if you are a ten in one shop you won’t necessarily be in another. Note as well that the sizes in Belgium and France are slightly larger than in Germany, and slightly larger again in Italy (a 40 in France is a 44 in Italy). Make sure when buying UK or European dresses online that there is a good return policy.

Another point of interest is that European dress sizes are set to change with the introduction of EN 13402 which is an optional new system developed by the EU in order to create more consistency among European dress sizes. This is based on cm and measures the physique in several dimensions, though it is not currently in widespread use.

I simply love this article about European dress sizes. Thank you very much. I’m always in trouble when I visit Europe and I want buy something. I don’t even know what size to ask for. Be sure I will learn these European dress sizes.

Sincerely, I do not understand what is with all these European dress seizes. Why isn’t just one way to determine sizes? For me this is very dazzling. Isn’t it this way for you too? Even so, with all these, I must learn your European dress seizes so I can manage when I want to buy something.

It isn’t so important to know all these European dress seizes. If you want to buy something ask for help. That’s why those advisors exist. You can ask them what size is proper for you. So, you can forget about the European dress seizes.

I know all the European dress seizes. They aren’t hard to learn. There is just a small difference between them. Anyway, it is not so important to learn all these European dress seizes. You can simply pick the size you think is proper for you.

I have never had problems with European dress sizes. I was always capable to choose the size I needed. It is enough to look at the dress and I can say if it fits me or not. So, for me, isn’t so important to know all these European sizes. I can manage on my own.

In my opinion it isn’t so necessary to know all these European dress sizes. For example if you want to buy something online you can browse on the internet these European dress sizes. Then you search the size you want to find. And that is all. You don’t need to know all these European dress sizes.

I agree with Hose. It isn’t important to know all these European dress sizes. There exist consultants which can help you. You just pick what dress you want and they will bring you the right size. All these European dress sizes are unnecessary to know.

Do you know what I think about all these European dress sizes? You don’t have to learn them. They are something stupid. I don’t even know why all these European dress sizes exist. Wasn’t enough just one size?

I didn’t realize there are so many European dress sizes. Good thing I read this article and found about them. But personally, I don’t agree with having so many European dress sizes. It would have been much easier with only one size conversion. Don’t you think?

I am form Belgium and once I was shopping in Germany. As you see the European dress sizes from Belgium are quite the same with those from Germany, with a little difference. I wear size 30, and without knowing that there is a difference between these 2 European dress seizes, I took the size 30. You should have seen me how I was struggling to fit in those pants. Obviously they were smaller. I was hilarious.

I really have a major problem with these European dress sizes. I never look for the right size for me. It is a little confusing having so many European dress sizes. And I agree with the rest of people. I think it would have been much easier with a universal dress size.

I don’t see where is the problem with these European dress seizes. All the main shops I have visited, have clothes with labels, right? Well, on those labels are written the sizes. If you look carefully the size for every product is written using all these European dress sizes. Is it hard?

I have never had problems with European dress sizes. I do not understand you people. Why is this so difficult? Knowing European dress sizes shouldn’t be a problem for anyone. But this is only my opinion…

  14. Denissee January 5, 2012 2:02 pm

I agree with you guys. All these European dress sizes are a problem in my opinion. It should exist just one European dress size. This would be easier for all of us. But…we cannot do anything regarding this…

  15. Gorun January 8, 2012 3:47 am

Oh guys…stop with all these complaints about European dress sizes!! Are you that stupid? You cannot manage with a dress size? I cannot believe you! I’m amazed!

  16. Romica January 8, 2012 8:04 am

I agree with Gorun. I do not think knowing some European dress sizes is so hard. And I do not think it is necessary to know all these European dress sizes. You can search them on the internet if you want to buy something online but you do not know what size to pick. So stop this!
