European Soccer

The European Soccer Championship (known in Europe as the European Football Championship or UEFA Cup) is a soccer competition like the world cup held by the Union of European Football Associations (or ‘UEFA’) once every four years. The European soccer championship has been going since 1960, and is staggered to take place in between the World Cup on the even numbered years between the World Cup tournaments. Previously known as the UEFA European Nations Cup, the name was changed in 1968 to the European Football Championship in Europe and the European Soccer Championship in North America reflecting the different terms used in the two continents.

As the name suggests, the European Soccer Championship is open to all Union of European Football Association members – which caters for all the major countries in Europe. Each country then puts forwards a squad for the European Soccer Championship much as they would in the World Cup chosen from the best players across all their teams and even international teams (for example, while David Beckham now plays for LA Galaxy, he would play for England in the European Soccer Championship being born in England).

Again like the World Cup, the European Soccer Championship also has a qualifying stage where the teams must earn the opportunity to play in the competition. This involves a series of smaller games before the large more widely televised events. From here the winners will then go through to the final tournament of the European Soccer Championship which has sixteen players in total. These are divided into four groups of equal size and then drawn up against one another using seeding to play each other. These winners then go through to the European Soccer Championship quarter final where there will be a knockout format. Of course this is then followed by a semi final with the winners playing each other in the finals. Unlike the FIFA World Cup, the European Soccer Championship has no play off for third place. The winners of the European Soccer Championship then receive the Henri Delaunay Trophy, named after Henri Delauney who originally came up with the concept of the European Soccer Championship (though he would not live to see the first tournament). The most recent winners were Germany in 2008, Greece in 2004, France in 2000, Germany in 1996 and Denmark in 1992.

Placed between the World Cup, the European Soccer Championship offers another large tournament for football fans in Europe where the sport is incredibly popular. It is second in size only to the World Cup, and is highly marketed and televised across most European countries. The next European Soccer Championship will take place in 2012 and will be co-hosted by Poland and Unikraine.

The European soccer is the most popular sport. European soccer teams make the crowds go nuts. Or what a friend of mine would say: only european soccer teams know what soccer is. I can’t disagree.

European Soccer, it is the most watched football event after the world cup, with it being in Europe which is a soccer loving country it comes as no surprise. However, in the recent years, it’s stardom has declined due to the fact that people have started thinking of it as all flash and no content. It comes as sad news for football players though, who have been trying their best.

Soccer is not really all that big here in the states. But I have always been a fan of soccer so I can see why Europeans love it. I would love to go see a European Soccer Championship. I think just being there would be so exciting.

I’m a big fan of soccer. I’ve seen all European soccer championships so far.
When I was young, my dream was to become a professional player,to play in a European soccer championship, but unfortunately I had an accident and couldn’t play anymore.
Now, my dream to play in a European soccer championship is fulfilled by my son. He is a pro and I’m very proud of him.

  5. Rosalinda   March 21, 2011 11:50 am

I’m a girl and I’m not a fan of soccer. That means I don’t like to watch European soccer championship. Unfortunately my husband is crazy about soccer. He even has a team with his friends.
I guess he knows all matches played in the European soccer championship.

  6. Abungu   March 22, 2011 4:49 am

I have never watched a full European soccer championship. I watch matches from European soccer championship only when my favorite team plays. If my team doesn’t go on in the final I don’t watch anymore. My favorite team is Denmark. I read here that it won the European soccer championship in 1992. I hadn’t known, but I’m glad to hear this.

  7. Quanna   March 27, 2011 5:29 am

Like Rosalinda said, us girls, we are not so interesting in soccer. I’ve never watched a European soccer championship. I’m more interesting in volleyball or handball or even golf.
Soccer is more interesting for boys. They like to watch a European soccer championship.

  8. macarena   April 2, 2011 3:56 am

Soccer is one of my favorite sports. Even if I’m a girl I like to watch to European soccer championship matches. I was even playing in a soccer team in high school. My parents were always saying that this is not a sport for girls. Even so I still go out with my friends (boys) when European soccer championship starts.

  9. priscilla   April 8, 2011 7:10 am

I live with my husband and my brother.
I don’t want to say what is in our house when European soccer championship begins… All our friends gather around and watch all matches.
What can I do if they like so much to watch to European soccer championship? This is their hobby…

  10. Christian   April 10, 2011 12:15 pm

I don’t know many things about European soccer championship. I live in SUA and here football is more important. There are given football scholarships and you know from TV that most popular people in a school are those who are playing football.
I’ve never seen a European soccer championship match. Even so, I think I would like this sport, but in our schools it is not practiced.

  11. Ramonna   April 16, 2011 10:15 am

Even if I am a girl I like to watch sports. When I was in college I practiced basketball. I could say that this is my favorite sports. Soccer is also one of the sports I like to watch. I’ve seen European soccer championship in 2004 and 2008. I can’t wait to see who wins the next European soccer championship in 2012. :D

  12. Foxy   April 19, 2011 10:09 am

European soccer championship is not one of my favorite things to watch. I don’t even like the atmosphere when a European soccer championship begins. Everybody watches TV just to see this sport. Everybody supports its team. Everybody talks just about their favorite team. They bore me.

  13. Abel   April 20, 2011 8:20 am

Since I was young I’ve watched every single European soccer championship.
Soccer is one of my favorite sports to watch and also to practice. I play this sport with my friends every weekend. It helps me to be fit.
Now, I am waiting for the next European soccer championship to start.

  14. Cait   April 24, 2011 9:58 am

I read these comments about European soccer championship. Here have posted more girls than boys even this sport is more boyish. To start like them, even if I am a boy I don’t like very much this sport. I don’t like to play and neither to watch. I haven’t watched any European soccer championship so far.

  15. Cici   May 8, 2011 5:18 am

Soccer is one of my favorite sports. It is one of the most popular sports in Europe. People love to watch the European soccer championship. In my family are 2 women that like to watch this sport.
Personally, I can’t wait the next European soccer championship in 2012.

  16. Alina   May 8, 2011 6:30 am

I hadn’t known that the next European soccer championship will be co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine. Thank you for this information. I’m sure I’ll watch this event. I hope my team wins the next European soccer championship. I keep fingers crossed for them and wish them good luck. :D

  17. Dianne   May 8, 2011 7:31 am

Even if I don’t like this sport I’m forced to watch it. My husband is crazy about this sport. Every four years he watches to European soccer championship. He almost forgets about me when European soccer championship begins. I don’t know why men like so much this sport.

  18. Soss   May 8, 2011 9:14 am

Sincerely, I don’t like to watch to European soccer championship. I don’t like this sport. I prefer more football than soccer. It has much more action.
Watching European soccer championship is boring.

  19. Picant   May 8, 2011 11:12 am

Germany is my soul team. I hope in 2012 Germany wins the European soccer championship. It deserves that. We need a victory. I want, at least, to see a good result on the next European soccer championship.

  20. Kidd   May 8, 2011 12:17 pm

I’ve never seen at least one European soccer championship. I don’t really like this sport. There are other things to see on TV more interesting than European soccer championship. I’m glad it is only from 4 to 4 years. People go crazy when it begins.

  21. Despina   May 8, 2011 1:50 pm

On this post about European soccer championship have written more girls than guys. Girls like soccer. I’m a girl too and I don’t think this sport is just for boys. What can boys do and us, girls, don’t? I watch European soccer championship too. I don’t think I’ve lost any of them since I was little.

  22. Abigail   July 7, 2011 5:12 am

I’m sure I’ll watch to European soccer championship next year. I must see what my favorite team does. I’m very curious. I hope France wins the next European soccer championship. I think they are prepared.

  23. Zorba   July 7, 2011 6:26 am

Next year I am going to Poland and Ukraine to see the next European soccer championship live. I must support my team, mustn’t I? Germany will surely win the next European soccer championship. They are good and they are also prepared. Wish them luck!

  24. Radoslav   July 15, 2011 3:45 am

Germany doesn’t have any chances of winning the next European soccer championship. Spain is much better. If Germany and Spain play together in the next European soccer championship, I’m sure Spain will win. It is my favorite team. And I put my trust in them.

  25. Oana   July 15, 2011 6:19 am

I live in Poland but I am not going to the European soccer championship. I don’t really like soccer so much. It isn’t my favorite sport. And Poland…it doesn’t have any chances of winning the next European soccer championship. They are not at all prepared.

  26. Oleg   July 15, 2011 7:41 am

Every team has equal chances of winning the next European soccer championship. There are good teams and teams which are not so good. But… you don’t know how lucky they are. Anyway, I’m very curious to see the winning team. I can’t wait for the European soccer championship to start.

  27. Valentina   July 22, 2011 4:42 am

Oleg, I don’t think it’s about luck here. I don’t believe in things like faith or luck. I don’t think the “luckiest” team will win the next European soccer championship. I think the best team will win. The team with the best players and the best strategy. It is important how they play not how much luck they have. So, the best team will win the European soccer championship next year.

  28. Oreste   July 23, 2011 2:05 am

Hi, I’m from Cyprus. I see that everyone said which their favorite team is, so I’ll tell mine too. I want Italy to win the next European soccer championship. This is my soul team. I think they are really good and they can win the European soccer championship.

  29. Filofteea   July 23, 2011 2:53 pm

I want to see a great show this year at European soccer championship. I’m also pretty curious who wins. I think Spain is very good and also Germany. I guess these two teams will be in the final. And, sincerely, if that happens, I want Spain to win the European soccer championship.

  30. Nazarie   July 24, 2011 4:13 am

Filofteaa, I think we are rivals from this moment =). I too think that Spain and Germany will play in the final of the European soccer championship next year and I want Germany to win. Spain is a very good team but Germany is better. They are both strong teams, but one of them must be the winner. Anyway, I’m sure we will see a great show next year at European soccer championship.

  31. Ermina   August 14, 2011 4:24 am

I don’t think Spain and Germany will be in the final of the European soccer championship. More probably Spain and Italy. Italy is stronger than Germany. It has much more chances to be in the final of the next European soccer championship. And I’m pretty sure that it will win too. Can’t wait to see.
