Europe has a lot to offer in terms of its culture and its scenery and each of the countries on the continent is a unique and exciting place to explore thanks to this incredible variation. But what about the European wildlife wildlife? Surely with such a varied range of climates and scenery there would be an equally impressive range of animals and creatures living there? Well you wouldn’t be wrong for thinking so, and there is plenty of European wildlife to see across the continent that can be hard to find elsewhere – and some animals found only in Europe. Here we will look at which ones those are, the rare species of animals found only in Europe.
The Alpine Chamois: The alpine chamois is a species of antelope living in the European mountains, namely the European Alps, the Tatra Mountains, the Carpathian mountains of Romania, the Balkans, some parts of Turky, South Island New Zealand and the Caucasus. It is a rare species and some subspecies are under protection of the EU as some of the European wildlife exclusive to the continent. They have short straight horns, rich brown fur with a white face, and enjoy high altitudes and jagged rocky terrains.
The European Mountain Goat: The name of this animal betrays the fact that it is another of our animals only found in Europe. Again this species enjoys high altitudes and climbing on rocky surfaces but is less rare.
Red Squirrel: Though found elsewhere and not exclusively European wildlife, the red squirrel is nevertheless very much an animal associated with Great Britain and England and is a native form of European wildlife. Sadly however the red squirrel is actually now low in number across England and Europe having been overrun by the grey squirrels introduced from North America. As such red squirrels are found mostly in Wales or islands such as ‘Brownsea Island’.
European Lynx: Who knew that European wildlife included wild cats? The European lynx is a very unique cat that weighs up to 80lbs and that preys on small deer, hares, foxes and other species of European wildlife. Found in Poland and elsewhere. The Eurasian lynx is the biggest small cat.
European Beaver: One of the world’s very largest rodents measuring up to 4.5 feet and weighing up to 70lbs (nearly as heavy as the European Lynx!).
Gray Wolves: Gray wolves (or grey wolves) are the largest wolf species and the genus we most often picture when thinking of wolves. Though they are not exclusive to European wildlife they are very rare throughout the world and Europe houses some of the few forests large enough to support them particularly in Eurasia.
European Elk: A large moose that lives in marshland and can live up to 25 years.
The Pine Marten: The pine marten is an exclusively European mammal belonging to the ‘mustelid family’ along with otters, badgers and weasel. It is roughly the size of a house cat and a very cute looking creature if you are lucky enough to spot this particular example of European wildlife.
Wolpertinger: Wolpertinger is a ‘ctypozoological’ example of European wildlife. That means it has yet to be documented scientifically and is based only on myth and rumour. The creature has nevertheless been sighted by many in Bavaria Germany and is said to look somewhat like a horned squirrel with bird feet. While you’ll be lucky to spot an actual wolpertinger (if indeed they exist) you will likely come across many stuffed versions of the creature while in Germany.

European wildlife includes all sorts of animals and most of them we don’t know that they even exist. For example the pine marten, I hadn’t known about his existence, but he is really cute.
European wildlife is really full of amazing animals.
For curiosity, I searched Wolpertinger on Google but I don’t think that it really exists. Moreover he is kind of scary.
Wow, thanks for a good reading. Didn’t know some of these things about the european wildlife. As far as I can see, we can find a wide range of animals in europe. Seems like now I’m in the mood for a documentary about the european wildlife. I hope I will find something interesting on the Internet. But I’d be grateful if someone posts some links here too.
This Wolpertinger seems very interesting. I bet only a few people knew about this animal. It also looks strange and creepy.
It seems like the european wildlife is formed of so many animals!
You should have posted a list with the most important part of the european wildlife.
And as a matter of fact, mountain goats can be found on other continents as well. They are just a little different from our european mountain goats. No matter what, the european wildlife is unique in this world. We should be glad about it.
European wildlife is surely enchanting. The variety of animals and birds is amazing. But you should have mentioned more about the european wildlife. There are many more great animals worth mentioning.
Any info about how the european wildlife evolved? I have an assignment to write about the european wildlife evolution. An essay or something like that in which to explain the evolution stages. But I can’t really find that much information for a complete essay.
I’m passionate about European wildlife, about animals in general. I guess that European wildlife is something that I will never discover entirely. Full of interesting and amazing animals, it is constantly adapting and progressing. European wildlife will always be my hobby.
I have a question about this. Sorry if it is considered off-topic, as it is not strictly related to the european wildlife.
So here is my question. Can I have any endangered species as pets? Does the law allow it? I would like to have an european wildlife exponent, but it’s one of the endangered species.
I don’t get it. Why does the european wildlife need to have different names for some animals. For instance, why do we have to call that large moose, european elk?
I have always appreciated the variety of the european wildlife. However, I have never got the point in that.
European wildlife is so beautiful. I can sit outside for hours and just enjoy all the life outside. I have lived in Europe (Germany) now for 2 years and think that the wildlife here is amazing. Just something about the wildlife that makes life seem very calming.
Indeed, European wildlife is an amazing thing.
Like you said, Europe is a place with an impressive range of animals. European wildlife has surprisingly diverse creatures and that’s because Europe has a huge range of habitats. This diversity of habitats makes possible the existence of all these amazing animals.
It’s a pity that there are so many endangered species from European wildlife…
I would love to see a European Beaver. That seems like it would be a pretty big animal. I do not think that beavers back here in the states get that big. Could be wrong, but most beavers I have seen are pretty small.
Because of these massive deforestations, European wildlife is in danger. This is sad, because there are so many endangered animals. Those animals need a home. Why are we so destructive?
There will come times when probably we will have lost all these things and we will be sorry that we didn’t do something for them.
European wildlife needs to be better cared!
European wildlife is something fascinating to me. I have a lot of pictures with different wild animals. They are beautiful creatures.
The red squirrel is my favorite from European wildlife. It is very playful and frisky and I have great pictures with it.
What can I say more about European wildlife? It’s indeed something fascinating…
I like to watch documentary about European wildlife. For me maternal instinct is something fascinating; how a mother protects his cubs. And how she would do anything so its babies to survive, even if she must die.
I’m really passionate about European wildlife. Animals are magnificent creatures to study about. It is interesting to study their behavior and to compare to human behavior.
European wildlife is a world which we’ve not discover entirely. And I’m sure we will never do, because it is in continuous progress.
I find European wildlife something magnificent. It amazes me with its diversity of animals. There are so many names and breeds and kinds of animals. And we don’t even know about all animals which are living on this continent. European wildlife will always amaze me.
I don’t know anything about these animals from European wildlife.
I have never been interested in animals. My parents tried to change my mind when I was little and bought me a dog, but they failed.
Not even know I don’t like animals. Blame me, but I can’t love them like other people do. European wildlife or animals are not an interesting subject to me.
I’ve seen many documentaries about European wildlife.
My favorite was about chimpanzees. I was fascinated when I saw how smart they are. Chimpanzees are almost like us, humans. They belong to European wildlife, but they have an intelligent part too.
European wildlife has a vast range of intelligent animals. Among these there are primates. About them I’m talking about.
This thing is amazing in my opinion. I think we should study more about animals’ behavior, more about European wildlife. We never know what interesting things we can find out.
European wildlife is an interesting subject in my opinion. Even if I don’t know many things about it, I love animals. They are souls, just like us. I would like to have around my house an animal from European wildlife. I guess… I would like to have a baby bear
European wildlife isn’t something very interesting to me. I don’t even know many things about it. I prefer other subjects.
I like animals, but domestic animals, not the animals from European wildlife. They are souls too, but they can be dangerous for us, people.
