Europe is a highly creative continent and churns out a whole range of books, films, comics and other stories. Of these, some fictional European heroes have risen above the medium in which they started and become heroes recognised the world over and in multiple formats. These fictional European heroes are almost like ambassadors for their countries and the continent, representing those countries’ unique personalities across the world and bringing the countries to many people’s attentions. Here we will look at just a few of those characters who have become immortalised stood the test of time.
Tin Tin: Tin Tin started life as the titular character in his own comic strip ‘Les Aventures de Tintin’ in a Belgian newspaper published in 1929. From here tough his adventures were adapted to television and enjoyed by children the world over. The stories have been praised universally for being well researched capers that involved politics, history and globe trotting; something which has been credited with lending Tin Tin his universal appeal. His sidekick ‘Snowy’ the dog is arguably as recognisable around the world as these two fictional European heroes come mostly as a pair.
James Bond: James Bond is one of the most enduring of any characters in film and literature, and particularly so among fictional European heroes. Created by Ian Flemming for a series of serialised stories and later novels, it wasn’t until he was first played by Sean Connery in the film ‘Dr No’ that his stardom really escalated. Since then, Bond has become one of the most recognised characters in film and literature and has been played by six actors across over twenty films. James Bond’s success among fictional European heroes comes from his being the ‘idealised’ gentleman – classy, mysterious, handsome, resourceful, charming etc – providing escapism for males wishing to be more like him and for women wishing their men were more like him. He has a number of catchphrases such as ‘Bond, James Bond’ and ‘Shaken not stirred’ and is in many ways a quintessentially British hero.
Asterix and Obelix: Asterix and Obelix are also cartoon fictional European heroes hailing from France. Like Tin Tin they started life in comics in the magazine ‘Pilote’ but have since gone on to star in many cartoons, books and even computer games. The series focussed on the two titular ancient Gauls fighting against Roman Occupation using a magic potion that grants them super-human strength.
Sherlock Holmes: Sherlock Holmes is another well known English character, again starting life in novels this time written by an Arthur Conan Doyle. Along with his sidekick ‘Dr Watson’, these fictional European heroes are a crime solving duo who use reasoning and logic to deduce the true nature of many murders and mysteries. These fictional European heroes have been credited as inspiring many modern crime dramas such as CSI, and have been adapted into many films and tv series. Most recently these include a new film series starring Robert Downey Jr that mixes their traditional problem solving with high paced action, and a televised series in the UK that features him in a modern stay.

From all these fictional European heroes, James Bond I like most.
His action movies are catchy and I have seen all of them.
Like you said James Bond succeeded among fictional European heroes because of his way of being.
And Sean Connery was the best for playing this role, because he was presentable, classy and very handsome, and he still is.
My favorite of these fictional european heroes is Sherlock Holmes. I have read so many books about him. My top favorites would be The Memoirs and obviously, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. However, I must admit that most books about Sherlock are quite attractive.
In my opinion, he is the best of fictional european heroes. I don’t know even why is he after “Asterix and obelix”. Damn.
James Bond is maybe the most famous of fictional european heroes. People’s favorite line is “Hi, my name is Bond… James Bond”. Obviously. I am another fan of him and I think his movies are great.
I can’t think about other fictional european heroes, beside the ones you mentioned, though. Any ideas?
Kids are interested in this kind of things. Some of them are even fascinated about it. I’m talking about fictional european heroes. And I guess Asterix and Obelix are the most popular among kids, as they are some cartoon fictional European heroes. Good thing that they exist.
I am also a fan of fictional european heroes. I can say that they were my childhood heroes. It’s fun to watch movies about them. Regarding books, it’s obvious that Sherlock Holmes is the best of fictional european heroes. Anyone care to argue about it?
Thanks to Sherlock, now we have these great modern crime TV series. CSI, Criminal Minds are just two of the best. So if you are one of the fictional european heroes fans, I am sure you will like TV shows of that kind. I smply love ‘em. And I have never thought that any fictional european heroes would have anything to do with their existence.
You talk about fictional European Heroes, but what about antiheroes? Generally, in my opinion, antiheroes are better played then the heroes.
Antiheroes are going through more psychological conflicts and even if they have imperfections that separate them from heroic characters, for me, they are the ones that if they wouldn’t exist, there wouldn’t be any action and therefore, neither any fictional European heroes.
Oh my god, tintin. The Adventures of Tintin made my childhood happy. The characters in those comic strips are the best fictional European heroes. God bless Georges Rémi. Without him, we couldn’t enjoy those fictional european heroes.
James Bond and Sherlock Holmes are maybe the most important fictional european heroes. Which is similar to being the most famous fictional european heroes. I am no fan of James Bond, but I admit he is very popular. And this is not only in Europe. People from all around the world appreciate him.
James Bond is one of the best fictional characters ever. He is a great hero. I am a big fan of James Bond and have been for awhile now. I would say he is probably the most recognized European fictional character.
Odd thing. I can’t remember any line of James Bond containing “Shaken not stirred”. Seems like I haven’t watched his movies enough. But I do agree that he’s the best of fictional european heroes. It would be funny if someone mentioned Tin Tin to be the best, hahah
In our work at the Europe-House Marienberg (an international education centre, somewhere in the deep dark forrests of Germany)we play a quiz from time to time. The final question in that quiz is: Which famous European Comic figure was made into a major motion picture by the two directors Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson. A large variety of wrong answers dribbles in as a result. According to most of our participants we have more European Heros than I ever dared to dream of (some of the greatest ideas were Gulliver from Gulliver’s Travels and Mickey Mouse). But hey, it isn’t it great that integration is not really a topic anymore… the moment we no longer need to think about how to integrate people, the problem is solved… thanks to the europe house quiz! http://thinkeurope21.blogspot.com/
I read that Asterix and Obelix series is one of the most popular France comics in the world. They are 2 of my favorite fictional European heroes.
I like the fact that what they do ends well all the time, even if they look and act so foolish. Luck with that magic potion which gives them superhuman strength.
They are 2 fictional European heroes that always make me laugh.
Sherlock Holmes was always one of my favorite Fictional European characters. I liked being able to work along side him and try to solve the cases with him. It sure did make you use logic. Holmes is a great character.
I guess James Bond is the most desired man of all fictional European heroes.
I like very much this character. I also like your description about him. No wonder that every woman is attracted by him.
From all fictional European heroes I would like to have a man like James Bond.
I have seen all the James Bond movies! I really love them and agree that Bond is a great fictional European hero. The movies were such a huge success. He is so the ideal man!
I have heard of Holmes and Bond but have never heard of the other characters before. I am a big fan of solving mysteries and Holmes is a great character for that. So therefore I tend to like him better than Bond. I will say though that Bond has stood the test of time!
I completely forgot about Tin Tin. And who could forget his dog Snowy? What a great comic. I can see why this is deserving of being on a fictional European Heroes list.
James Bond is definitely one of my favorite from all fictional European heroes.
Today, I actually saw the movie of James Bond. Sean Connery was a very beautiful man. And he still is. He made from his character, maybe the most impressive from all fictional European heroes.
Harry Potter definitely belongs in this list too, plus some classic fictional heroes like Don Quichote, Hamlet, Othello, Odysseus and Hercules. And then there are these countless children’s heroes like Cinderella, Winnie The Pooh, Alice, Willy Wonka etc.
