Racism in Europe

Sports teach us about team bonding, unity, and brotherhood more so than just winning and losing the game. The spirit of any game does not lie in whether your team won or lost to the opponent team but how well your team played. However, the evil of racism has gradually entered the arena of sports and many shameful events have occurred lately which clearly marks the beginning of racism in Europe, and one such sport where racism is clearly noticeable is football, the world’s most popular sport. So how come all of a sudden racism in Europe and in European football is so much on rise?

European racism video:

Many might not know it but racism in Europe sports began during the early 1970s and 1980s in the British Isles where black footballers from ethnic backgrounds and culture were abused verbally by the crowd. Many of the people in the stadium sang racist and anti-semitic songs and yelled out racist slurs that would hurt the mindset of the black footballers driving them out of the game. It was then that racism in Europe was linked to far-right groups who were trying to use football matches and games as a recruitment spot of new members in their gang and to propagate their racist-based literature as it would be an ideal location for them to brainwash thousands of people at one single point of time.

During the 1990s, British government introduced strong measures to combat racism in Europe and European football and many other non-government organizations joined hands with the British government in order to eradicate European racism but the efforts did not bring in much change to the situation. In the year 2004, racism in Europe continued to show up its ugly face when second half substitute Shaun Wright-Philips was abused by the crowds by making monkey noises and racist chants against him. In another racism event, British media blamed Spanish coach Luis Aragones for an incident before the match where Aragones was filmed by Spanish TV crew where he motivated Jose Antonio Reyes by making racist references to his teammate Thierry Henry. Though the Spanish FA should have taken action against Aragones, they prefer only to fine Luis Aragones for his racist comments.European Racism

Racism in Europe once again came into the spotlight in 2006 when Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o suffered racial abuse by fans of Real Zaragoza. Fans began to make monkey chants and verbal abuse and Eto’o finally threatened to leave the pitch in protest but was finally calmed down by his teammates. In another European racism event Atheltico Madrid was fined 600 Euros for racial comments against Espanyol’s Cameroon goalkeeper Carlo Kameni and Deportivo La Coruna.

Another news of European racism in football broke out when Ivorian defender Marc Zoro was abused by the visiting Inter Milan supporters with strong fascist views. Ex-Lazio player Paolo Di Canio found himself in deep waters after making the fascist salute to the Lazio fans in the stadium. Now with the World Cup just around the corner FIFA President Sepp Blatter has said that they will simply abandon the match if they find any element of European racism happening in the stadium which would affect the sports and individual leagues drastically.

Racism sometimes comes from the lack of education. But not always. Some other times, the “racist” people are right. Maybe those who are rejected are mostly criminals.

The european racism could be fought with more education.

Racism is everywhere. And it exists since ever. It is quite a normal thing, taking into account the diversity in this world.
Also, the racism in europe is not at the same level as it is in america.

  3. Davola   February 4, 2010 1:27 pm

I also think racism has no place in sports. Sports should bring people together, not separate them. Too bad that we have racism in europe. We should strict laws for every racist.

  4. Jossey   February 7, 2010 10:50 am

In these times, racism should not be tolerated. No matter what kind of racism we are talking about. Nor the country where it comes from.

    Racism in europe should disappear!

  5. Stan   February 8, 2010 2:00 pm

Get real, guys. Racism is normal and you can’t get rid of it. It is based on the differences between nations and races. I don’t know the level of the racism in europe, though.

  6. freeman   February 9, 2010 1:47 pm

No, dudes, racism is NOT normal!! Racism should not exist in a modern society! Not to mention the european racism. As I know, the european union has some strict rules country must obey.

For the purpose of educating people about racism, the YWCA started a movement called Stand Against Racism. The goal is to raise awareness that racism still exists in our communities and that it cannot be ignored or tolerated. Our objective is to bring organizations and individuals together, who believe like we do, that united we can eliminate racism. To learn more or to get involved visit http://www.StandAgainstRacism.org.

I agree with stan.Racism is every where, I know this and I’m only 12.I mean serously racism is in schools and people stll haven’t gotton rid of it.What makes you sure we can get rid of it in awhole continet? And people say kids are fictional.

  9. Angie   December 31, 2010 11:52 am

Lets face it. There is racism everywhere. It is too bad that these players are facing it. But racism will always be. People are just not educated enough that there is nothing wrong with other races. But until we all see that , there will be racism.

  10. quentin   January 7, 2011 6:52 am

i agree with angie racism is everywhere. And the football players have to deal with it.If rascim happens again in the stands nothings going to happen to the people in the stand it just going to back fire to on the football players

  11. tulsa   January 9, 2011 1:36 pm

There is Racism everywhere. Not just in Europe. It is too bad that the players are subject to that, but I am sure if they played here in the states they maybe subject to it as well. I am not saying Racism is right because it is not. But you encounter it all over not just Europe.

  12. Courtney   January 13, 2011 9:09 am

Your an a-hole if you think racism is normal. It is because of peoples ignorances that people are racist. So what they are a different color or believe in something different you have to except they have the right to voice there opinions not just you. You have to except people the way they are. That coach from Spain should have been fired and shunned by FIFA.

  13. MARK   January 21, 2011 12:41 pm

I think that no matter where you are located at, racism is on the rise. It is really too bad that sports players have to be discrimintated like this. Why can we not look past the color of people’s skin or their nationality? Too me it does not matter what color of skin you have or where you are from. And it should not matter to these people either. It should only matter at how well these athletes play the game.

  14. Anthony   February 12, 2011 10:07 pm

I don’t know what in the “wide world of sports” is going on over there in Europe but I can tell you this without hesitation. If a bunch of wanna be Nazi were here in the states and started throwin up the Hitler salute and waving Nazi flags at a soccer game (I mean football game because soccer is a kids game over here) but I digress, but as I was saying, before the Police arrested them, there would be some YOU-TUBE highlight beat downs issued. Come on Europe, really,,, blatant racism is so 1960′s who does that anymore? Sure racism exist, until you show them how insecure they are with themselves they are and make them embarrassed to identify with that 1930′s foolishness.Look, everybody has a little “izm” in them, wether it’s race, sex or whatever discriptive you want to put in front of that “izm” all I’m sayin is keep it to the confinds of your house.peace bee-ouch

  15. Maxwell   February 20, 2011 11:01 am

Racism is going to exist no matter where you are and no matter what orgin you are. It is really a shame. I think that racism is Europe is the same as it is here in the states. You just can not completely overcome it.

  16. Hilda   February 27, 2011 4:01 am

I don’t agree at all with racism in Europe.
I don’t know why there still exist people who are judging other people just for their color. After all we are all humans.

And it’s not about racism in Europe just in sports. It’s about every day living, when people of other color or race are discriminated.

  17. hestia   February 27, 2011 8:18 am

This video of racism in Europe really made me sad. I almost cried.
I don’t understand why there still exists racism in Europe. I thought that we’ve evolved and we’ve become more compassionate. After all we all have a soul and we all deserve to live.

  18. benjamin   April 17, 2011 2:49 am

its quite ridicolous that racisms ugly head is being shown again. I think we are living in a time where peoples truest colors are being revealed. Im sure our ancient ancestors werent so ignorant as people are displaying themselves to be today. Its also quite amusing the one dimensional thinking patterns of individuals today, for instance i am an african-american, nonbiased and freethinking in every sense. But often times when in europe people will assume im coming from some racially oppressed society and that this is not present in europe. But nothing can be further from the truth. I couldnt believe the ingrained racism ive found while traveling throughout europe, the fear and ignorance sometimes was as a slap in the face. In the u.s. racial issues today are quite rare, but transparent and handled quickly, and often times non-exsistent, and we are a fairly young country. People of color and different religion, nationalities are in every facet of the social and economical structure, unlike in europe. i have yet to see a black business man suited and booted walking down the street in spain for instance, instead i saw black refugees selling fake prada purses by the hundreds. The racism in europe is deep-rooted indeed, and often scary. Yes ignorance scares me. If we let racism prevail in this world we are doomed for destruction until the day comes for accountibility and reckoning.

I agree benjamin. Europeans think racism is worst in the US, when in reality it isn’t. We are more direct at addressing racism and speak up about the injustice and unequally of certain minorities while they, in European will ignore blatant racism if they see it. They are to afraid to confront a racist when they see it and have a indirect way of showing racism to minorities and sweep it under the rug.

See me being black in the US, we don’t ‘hide’ our racism we confront the jerks that caused it and let justice take place! Reporting it to the law, or filing a lawsuit is a good and proper way to show the person that what they did is wrong and now they have to pay for it! I agree with the statement that black or other minorities in Europe don’t have higher socioeconomic levels like they do in the US, they don’t become big company leaders or CEOs like they do here in the states.

  20. T.B   June 8, 2011 12:42 am

Just because racism in Europe isn’t discussed as much as it is in the U.S, doesn’t mean that Europe is less racist. That kind of thinking leads people to ignore racism; in turn making it worse. There is a lot of xenophobia and racism prevalent in Europe that Europeans just choose to ignore or not discuss. Just because Europe was anti slavery before America was doesn’t mean those same racist thoughts and ideals disappeared. Apartheid in South Africa is one of the biggest examples of European racism. Even though it didn’t happen in Europe.

  21. Piotruniu   June 16, 2011 11:21 am

People, racism in Europe is a perfectly normal and natural reaction to mass immigration of non-whites into Europe. To judge people with racist beliefs thanks to this phenomenon, is extremely narrow-minded and low-brow behaviour.

Also, racism has absolutely nothing to do with education either, not does it have anything to do with intelligence, nor does it even have to do with choice. Human beings are an exceptionately diverse species with many different feelings, beliefs and worldviews found among individuals. Racism is simply another human belief/emotion, that manifests as an interpretation of the changing environment in Europe.

The best way to end racism in Europe, as so many of you are advocating here and bawling your eyes out as to how terrible it is, is to simply close the borders, deport people of colour from Europe over a long-term period, and viola, racism kaput! It’s really that simple, rather than hoping that racist Europeans will just magically change when one of your clicks your fingers or farts.

  22. real   December 24, 2011 5:53 am

Dear protuniu you are also a very narrow minded europeans; what happen when you will close the border of europe do u think that is the end of racism………….the racism we are fighting not only Black and white…there are other people from eastern europe who some are also descriminated so just be fair by stopping racism just top thinking of colour of the skin of your fellow human being

By the way when you close the border for people we will demands you to close the border also for natural resources bse u dont have any…..

but if you deport all non white in europe and we says that we deport all boers….all australians….all canadians and all american to their origin place at the year 1400 before european immigration to other peoples land do u think is going to be fair to you??????????????

iam very sorry to meet you online….

Racism has nothing to do with education, ignorance or socio – economic issues. It is a deep seated virulent strain of primordial misanthropy that runs through every single being on this planet regardless of what race you are.

In every country you will see it raise its ugly head; in Africa with its tribal wars, in India with its caste system that discriminates against those who have darker skin and so to in Europe amongst the caucasians, asiatic mongols and balkans.

Every one of us is racist albeit subliminally. It manifests itself in courtship and marriage with priority given to racial types we chose over others in our sexual preference. There is nothing wrong with this kind or racism because it is our primordial sexual gravitation that allows us to choose our mates. No violence necessary.

When racism manifests itself as cursing and violence against our fellow man then its a dark day for humanity indeed. We are all made in the image of God and by insulting each other we are insulting and blaspheming God Almighty. Jesus warned us about prejudice and hate in the gospels when He said

“Because you did it unto those my brethren. So to you did it unto Me”.

    how about Islamic Racism!

Non-Muslims are inferior under Muslim Sharia!

  25. Jason   October 18, 2012 7:54 am

But don’t forget American racism as well. They disseminate it all around the world via their movies, sitcoms and series.

I’ve noticed in many movies out of America that there are often racist associations made with “black” characters in the movies and series. For example, I was watching an idiotic movie starring The Rock called Doomed. In one scene a black soldier scrambles up into a duct and falls back down and starts shooting up into the vent. The camera zooms in on his face and The Rock asks him what he saw. He answers, ” a monkey”.

On the same night I was watching Star Trek voyager. There was a scene where a “black” guy is playing poker with members of the crew As the game is breaking up, he asks the one guy remaining, a “white” guy, ” do you want a game of “black jack”.

And whilst I’m here, I now recall a Harry Potter movie where one of the teacher witches asks an assembled group not to carry on like baboons. Just as she says this the camera cuts to a “black female student”.

I have also seen this happen in many other offerings from America. I find this truly sick. The studios that do this should be litigated against or at least exposed.

It reminds me of what the Nazis did to dehumanize the Jews by associating them with vermin.
