European Souvenirs

Whenever you go on holiday somewhere new it’s always a nice idea to get souvenirs to take back and this is particularly true when you visit somewhere with as varied a culture as Europe. European souvenirs will mean that you have something physical to remind you of your time abroad and of your adventures and then when you look through your belongings you will be ‘taken back’ to those travels – it’s surely the cheapest way to travel if nothing else. At the same time it’s also nice to bring back souvenirs for friends and family to give them a ‘piece’ of your holiday. This then shows them what they missed by not being there and means they get to try a little bit of the culture themselves and to try something edible or something ornate that they might not have experienced at home. Of course another nice aspect of European souvenirs is that they show that you were thinking about the person while you were away and this can be very touching for them and a great way to strengthen your relationship. Finally, a lot of European souvenirs are of course very nice in their own right and can be a great addition to their home and something that they’ll appreciate a lot.

There are a range of European souvenirs you can buy. Of course this will depend on the part of Europe you are travelling too, and it will also depend on the person you are buying for and your relationship with them. However the main thing to consider is the nature of the souvenir you want to buy. Some people will choose edible for instance and here it is normal to buy something that is associated with the area you are visiting. For instance if you were visiting Germany you might buy someone sausages or lebkuchen, while if you were visiting Russia or Poland you might bring them back some vodka.

Alternatively you may wish to bring back an ornamental item and again it is often nice to bring back items that are unique to the country you are visiting. This might then mean that they are designed in that style, or it might mean that they are replicas of famous statues or land marks. Visiting Rome then you might bring back a smaller version of a Michaelangelo statue, or coming back from Turkey you might bring back a decorative chest as your European souvenir. You can also bring back items that are actually sourced from the area – such as stones mined from that part of the world. For instance if you were in Krakow you could bring back a piece of jewellery made from amber, or just a piece of amber, which is sourced nearby.

European souvenirs to avoid are things like t-shirts with the place name written on them or coasters. These are somewhat ‘tacky’ and don’t demonstrate the culture or the environment that you have visited. A great place to shop for your European souvenir is in European markets, as these will sell authentic and unique items that are made locally and that sell for very cheap prices.
