Future European Union member country

European Union symbol

European Union symbol

The European Union was formed in 1951, and has been expanding ever since through the process of enlargement, which is basically done with the inception of more countries as member states. Today, the European Union has 27 member states, with Romania and Bulgaria being the latest additions in 2007. The main aim behind the formation of the European Union was decentralization of governmental authority in terms of trade and external affairs.
The stakes for a membership of the European Union are really high. It is not easy to be members of the EU and there are some hard criterion that need to be fulfilled regarding the political and economic stability of the country, as laid down in the Copenhagen Treaty. Apart from fulfilling these, the country must be a stable democracy and all other 27 member states and the European Parliament should agree upon the inclusion of the concerned country into the EU.
There has been speculation that addition of any more member states would hamper the decision taking authority of the European Union and therefore, the EU treaty states that there can be no more inclusions. A lot is being done to relax the conditions laid down in this treaty and another treaty- The Treaty of Lisbon, is taking form.
The main reason why many non-member states want to be a part of the European Union is the freedom by which goods are exchanged. All countries in the EU have a common trading policy and a free market environment, allowing for unabated movement of goods, agricultural products and fisheries among others. The EU also enjoys a high administration degree in the internal affairs of Europe and the politics of Europe are more or less shaped at the hands of the EU. Monetarily, being a part of the EU means a market large enough to sustain without having to trade with other outer world countries, and still being able to get the benefits of a free-market policy and this is a main attraction for countries who are trying to join the EU. Therefore, the stakes are always high when it comes to joining the EU.
Some of the countries whose membership is being considered, or who have filed for membership are Croatia (which has better statistical indicators than Bulgaria or Romania, and is therefore, expected to be a part of the EU by 2010), The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (which is facing problems because of a name conflict with Greece, which is a member state and will veto against the accession of Macedonia until the name issue is resolved) and the western Balkan countries including the countries of Bosnia, Serbia, Slovenia and Albania. The Balkan states have been recognized as possible member states by the EU parliament and might be included any time in the future because of stability in economy and good trade relations of these states with the rest of the European Union.

Europes favorite- the Mini Cooper

mini_cooper_on_water

Mini Copper On Water

Yes, undoubtedly, Europe’s favorite car would be none other than the Mini Cooper. So what sets the 1959 launched Mini apart from other cars of that era? It was the path-breaking idea of a front-wheel drive which allowed for the space at the rear of the car to be utilized for seating and luggage, making the car 80% more efficient in terms of space utilization. Manufactured by BMC- The British Motor Company, the Mini was looked at as an equivalent of the Volkswagen Beetle, which enjoyed popularity of similar proportion in North America.
The Mini served as a blue print for many future models of cars as it was possibly the most space-efficient car of that time, and being space efficient, it weighed less, had fewer body parts and therefore, was much better in fuel economy than some of the larger American beasts present in the market at that time.
The car epitomized youth and went well with the more mature drivers as well. It is for this reason only that the Mini has been a loved brand by many in Europe; right from the first model in 1959to the recently launched New MINI in 2001. The New MINI is manufactured in the Oxford Plant of it parent companies.
Known for their sweet ride and subtle driving pleasure, the Cooper MINI and the MINI “S” were launched to revamp the appeal of the MINI from an ideal family car to a sportier, leaner and meaner vehicle. Both these versions were heavy on the engine and were launched with modified features to serve as really cars. This was a successful move and these models ended up winning the Monte Carlo Grand Prix, not once or twice, but three times in a row.
The history of the MINI clans have been divided into Marks, or eras, signifying various decades and models through which the MINI passed. Mark 1 MINI, which lasted from 1959 to 1967, showcased models such as the Austin and the Morris, which became household names in that era. The Mark 2 and the Mark 3 MINI cars showcased many new features including refurbished suspensions, braking systems, smaller size, better use of space and some cosmetic changes. Variants such as the MINI van and the MINI truck were launched. The MINI “S” and the Cooper are the most technologically advanced versions of the MINI that have been added to the lineage of the MINI over the years.

Euro at an all time high against the Dollar

Dollar vs Euro

This past week saw the Dollar falling to an all time low against the Euro amidst pressures and reluctance of foreign investors to invest in America due to the ongoing trade deficit and global volatility in the markets. Amidst all these developments, the Dollar slipped as low as 1.59, which means that one Euro brought 1.59 Dollars.
The fall of the Dollar started in the mid-week when data from the international markets started showing a decrease in the amount of foreign currencies flowing into the US. This led the investors into speculation and most of them started to either withdraw their money from the US markets, or stopped investing further, which led to the fall of the Dollar, not only against the Euro, but against the Yen and even the Rupee.
The main reason behind the rise of the Euro has been the fact that the US is enforcing stringent tax laws against Chinese products flowing into the US, especially the textiles and the steel products. In reactionary actions, the Chinese government had in turn stopped investing into the US markets, and rather they have started to foray into the European and Japanese markets, making the Dollar weaker and the Euro and the Pound stronger on the International front. Looking at the Chinese reactions, small and medium sized investors have also started investing in the Euro, which is considered to be the apt Universal currency against the Dollar, which is the universal currency presently.
Terrorism is also a reason behind the decline of the Dollar. It is not that European nations are secure against it, but the investors feel that the Euro covers a larger geographic area than the Dollar and therefore, an attack in one of the countries where the Euro is existent will not hamper the overall worth of the European markets, and therefore, hypothetically at least, the Euro is more cascaded against the ill-effects of terrorism as a currency.
Over the next few weeks, it is speculated that the Dollar will recover, but the Euro will hold a commanding position over the long run considering the American Fed’s policies, effects of terrorism and the genuine charm of investing in a universal currency such as the Euro.

Historical Monuments in Europe

Eiffel Tower – France

Europe is blessed with eminent history marked with signs of glory. Almost every part of Europe manifests historical monuments, statues, carvings, sculptures, or statistics. To name just a few is a difficult task. But to start with, we will have to mention the giant Colloseum of Rome, The Eiffel Tower in France, The Dover Castle and The Longleat House in the United Kingdom and many more.

The Colloseum of Rome, built in 70-80 A.D, located in the interior of Rome, is a massive structure. It has been included in the Seven Wonders of the World. The Colloseum was initially built to serve as an amphitheatre in Rome, largest of its kind. The exterior of the Colloseum is oval in shape. The Colosseum has suffered heavy losses due to earthquakes and wars in the past. Therefore, the outer wall is damaged to a degree.

The Colloseum has been associated with Emperor Caesar. In fact, the locals call The Colloseum in Caesar’s name only. The Roman Colloseum was built under the rule of Emperor Vesparsian. It was built as an entertainment hub for his natives. Emperor Vesparsian could not complete the Colloseum and passed away. His son, Emperor Titus, took over the charge and accomplished The Colloseum in 80 A.D. He organized many public events like theatre, drama and gladiator fights. The Colloseum started worsening during the middle ages. Therefore, many buildings were constructed to support The Colosseum.

When we are talking about Europe’s historical monuments, we can’t overlook The Eiffel Tower.
Eiffel Tower, located in Paris, was named after its designer Gustave Eiffel. It was the first of its kind in the world and was built to celebrate The French Revolution. It got completed in the year 1889. Eiffel tower has remained the tallest structure in the world for nearly forty one years. It is still the tallest building in Paris. People from all over the world visit Paris only for The Eiffel Tower. The architecture is so attractive that people have made its replica in Las Vegas. They tower is built only in iron. It caused great danger at one point of time because the iron had expanded due the sun. This architectural plan faced a lot of criticism at the time of its proposal. The irony is that The Eiffel Tower is the most loved monument today, which has the highest selling tickets. And The Eiffel Tower stands high in Paris.

European airlines success

Thinking beautiful landscape, mesmerizing country side and beautiful people? You desperately need to visit Europe, at least once. Europe has been a revered tourist attraction for centuries now. Places including Switzerland, Greece, Spain, The United Kingdom, France and Germany have been known as hot-tourist destinations for years now and millions of tourists throng these places, especially during the summers.
In this article, we would be talking about the most prominent air-service provider in Europe- Air Europe. It is defunct now in most respects, but even today, people remember Air Europe as the airline that started getting the tourists attracted towards Europe, owing to great service and hospitality.

Air Atlanta Plane - Europe

Air Atlanta Plane – Europe

Established by Errol Cossey and Martin O’Regan, Air Europe was financially backed by Harry Goodman, who also happened to be the chairman of the International Leisure group-ILG, the parent company of Air Europe and all its subsidiaries. Air Europe supplied charter seats to Intasun Leisure, which was the second largest private tour operator during the 1980s.
It all started when Cossey, an executive with Dan Air, a down-market airline carried of the 70s and the 80s overlooked Dan air’s deals with Intasun Leisure to offer chartered flights at really low rates to their common customers. The problem arose when jet-fuel priced rose dramatically post 1973 oil crisis, which led to cutting in the profits of both the companies.
British Airways had already built a fleet of Boeing 737 aircrafts, which were far more economical than the existing comets being used. Cossey and his companion Regan were unable too convince the then chairman of Dan Air into buying new aircrafts.
Both of them approached Harry Goodman, the chairman of ILG, and the owner of Intasun Leisure to take his bite on the issues, he seemed interested in this ‘breakthrough’ idea and financed their project. This is how Air Europe came into existence and kept on branching towards various nations in the European zone, thereby becoming the first Pan-European airline. Later, by the early 1990s, due to heavy debt and liabilities, the airline started fazing out and finally ended operations in 1991.
Air Europe was the pioneer of enjoyable and luxurious charter flight traveling at economical prices in Europe, which led more people into getting their packages and thereby, exploring Europe.
